It was morning, sun still struggling for altitude. It was overcast to boot. Light levels were less than ideal, limiting my ability to see much in the water, especially low-contrast countershaded whales.
An indistinct blob appeared at first, gradually taking form until the outline of an approaching whale emerged from the ocean twilight below. The silhouette of a calf emerged next. Both whales aimed for the surface, straight toward me.
As the pair approached, the adult arched, using her elongated pectoral fins for counterbalance. The calf followed in her slipstream, mirroring both form and flow. The perfect illustration of bond between mother and child, and an excellent example of learning via imitation.
This is one of the most memorable portraits I've ever taken of a humpback whale mother and calf.
