This is a close-up view of an adult female humpback whale’s fluke (Megaptera novaeangliae) at the ocean surface, edge adorned with acorn barnacles (Coronula diadema).
You can also see the scars left from where barnacles have fallen off or otherwise been dislodged. There are also some whale lice (Cyamis boopis) visible, for the truly eagle-eyed.
Neither the barnacles nor the whale lice (which are actually amphipods, not lice, but saying whale-philic amphipod doesn’t sound nearly as icky) seem to do any harm to the whales. They might even confer some benefit, like helping with self-defence (barnacles), and keeping skin healthy (whale-philic amphipods, aka whale lice).
