This little fish is called a koke-ginpo in Japanese, with its proper binomial moniker being Neoclinus bryope. Measuring up to about 8cm in length (3 inches), this species lives on both sides of the Pacific, ranging from Japan and Korea waters on the western side to California over in the east.
On the day that we met, there was a substantial swell that rocked everything in the ocean back-and-forth, back-and-forth. Conditions like this suck for photography, because everything moves, including you. Try squinting through a viewfinder at a tiny subject magnified to 2x life-size while someone pushes you back-and-forth. You’ll quickly appreciate the frustration and significant potential for instant seasickness.
There was one good thing about the rhythmic flow of the ocean though. Every once in a while, the swell fluffed the frills above the fish’s eye to create the brief impression of a bad hair moment.
Each print is chopped with my logo. Sizes listed are the dimensions of the printed image in inches (see FAQ for equivalent sizes in centimeters). There is an additional white border around the image to allow for framing. A complete list of image and paper sizes can be found in the FAQ.
