One of the most important things about observing animals in the wild is to let them choose whether or not to interact, on their own terms.
Here, a female sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus) decided to swim past me at very close quarters to have a look. To her, I was a thing bobbing in the water, clearly a living thing, but something out of the ordinary. A quick look was enough to satisfy the whale’s curiosity. She eased by, then continued on her way, undisturbed.
