The role of escort whales is not entirely clear, but from years of observation, I’d wager that the males serve many purposes, like providing protection, attempting to procreate, and sometimes even just hanging out.
Here, the male’s role seemed to be playing the prima donna with a penchant for twirling and striking poses.
