This is an adult male humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) holding out his pectoral fin while sticking the front portion of his body out of the water, a behaviour that is often referred to as spyhopping.
Many people say that spyhopping whales are “looking” out of the water, but many times, the whale’s eyes are below the ocean surface, as you can see here.
This image is one of my personal all-time favourites, not just because of the wonderful experience of sharing time with this whale, but also the perfection of his pose. The arc, structure and sweep of this whale's pectoral fin leads your eyes from the foreground, along the intricate indentations of the pec fin, all the way back to the spyhopping cetacean. Eye contact seals it.
