This irresistibly cute animal is a Japanese dwarf flying squirrel (Pteromys volans orii). Known locally as ezo-momonga, this sub-species of Siberian flying squirrel is found only in Hokkaido.
As adorable as this little fellow is (It’s a boy. Can’t you tell?), the look on his face is actually all-business. Primarily a nocturnal species, this male was out and about during the day because he was competing for the attention of a female in estrus.
