Squishy-cute-I-want-to-hug-you Japanese dwarf flying squirrels (Pteromys volans orii) are nocturnal foragers. Called Ezo-momonga in Japanese, these animals emerge from their nests in the evening, spending time getting ready for a night’s work.
This often involves bouts of intense preening interspersed with extended periods of—for lack of a better description—staring into the night. These small animals are naturally wary, as they make tasty treats for owls and such, which are also active under the cover of night. I assume that when the squirrels pause like this, they are looking and listening for predators before ascending into the canopy.
