Pretty in Pink RR04

There I was, minding my own business, all alone about 20m (66ft) down the side of a small seamount in the middle of the Coral Sea. A few friends were also in the water, but nowhere to be seen at the time.

Out of the blue (please excuse the obvious pun) came a shriek, then another and another, each higher in pitch and more insistent than the previous. If you’re a diver, you’ll know that while sound travels well underwater, directionality is difficult because sound spreads so rapidly in all directions that you usually can’t quite figure out where it’s coming from.

In this case, the only logical place was somewhere on the other side of the seamount. So rapid and numerous were the shrieks that I grew concerned for the welfare of my fellow divers.

I rushed to the far side of the mount, where I saw my friends staring at Captain Craig of the MV Golden Dawn, who was giggling and clapping his hands together while pointing and gesticulating like a happy little schoolgirl who had one Twinkie too many during recess.

Craig pulled me over to show me this frogfish (Antennarius commerson), which was about 30cm or so in length (just under 12 inches).

“Yes, Craig,” I tried to communicate, “It is a very pretty hue of pink. Please calm down.” This species of frogfish isn’t particularly rare, so none of us was quite sure what Craig was on about, but then again, Craig is Craig.

When I showed him a preview of this image on my camera’s LCD, Craig clapped his hands together and squealed again.

Not until we were back on the boat did I realize that in over 20 years of diving in these waters, Craig had never seen one of these frogfish. The fact that it was pink only heightened his excitement.

It was, to the best of my recollection, the squeakiest dive I’ve ever experienced.

Each print is chopped with my logo. Sizes listed are the dimensions of the printed image in inches (see FAQ for equivalent sizes in centimeters). There is an additional white border around the image to allow for framing. A complete list of image and paper sizes can be found in the FAQ.
